How Growing Fat Cells Jeopardize Weight Loss Over 40

By: Prry Prman

Men and Women over 40 trying to lose weight permanently face an identical problem: The fat piles up much easier after 40 and is harder to lose too.

Storing fat used to be important for survival, and fat is a great storage medium for energy. Through human history, we’ve survived many shortages and starvation periods because we could rely on our body fat.

Today, the ability of our bodies to store fat easily threatens permanent weight loss. Let’s understand how fat cells work and why it is so challenging for men and women over 40 to lose weight permanently.

If your body takes in more energy as you spend existing fat cells fill up. And it does not count if you are eating fat or starch or sugar: All extra calories enter fat storage. When the fat cells you already have are full, the body makes new fat cells, a biological process with no limits.

Especially if you are stressed, building fat cushions is often comfortable. But the most serious threat to lose weight permanently over 40 is: Existing fat cells won’t be destroyed. It is impossible to shorten the number of fat cells that exist, but you can reduce the quantity of fat stored in those cells.

If your fat cells are full, they transmit a Neuropeptide to your brain called Leptin. While the Leptin level in your blood is high, your brain gets the message that you aren't hungry and don't need to eat. When your body's fat cells become exhausted, the Leptin is gone - and you become hungry.

Now, let's be totally honest and unveil a truth: To lose weight permanently over 40, feeling slightly hungry is something you are going to have to live with. This is an emotional challenge and that’s why I stress so much the psychological science behind permanent weight loss- your mind needs ways to cope with that emotional challenge. In order to lose weight permanently, any weight loss program you choose must include moral advice to be effective.

In addition the distribution of fat shifts with the years for women. For young women, it’s frequently on the hips and on the tights. For women after 40, it’s generally on the belly- and visceral belly fat is linked with many diseases.

Our bodies are equipped with important regulation mechanisms. Although we do not eat the same number of calories every day, our bodies keep their weight for a long time. Our bodies then counterbalance for these calories changes, which leads to another problem for reaching permanent weight loss over 40:

If you over-eat for a long period of time, your body will adjust to the new weight and will try to hold that weight. You will perpetually feel the need to "feed" the existing fat cells. The longer you continue on starving diets, the more severe your hunger pangs can get.

Acquiring weight is very easy. Consuming only 100 calories per day surplus of what your body burns will lead to acquiring about 9 lbs (4.5 kg) per year. And these 100 calories are very easy to acquire. For example, a 12 oz. can of Coca-Cola contains 155 calories, and a Kit Kat Wafer Bar has 218.

To eliminate these 9 lbs you would have to eat nothing for roughly 2 weeks. Or jog 51 hours, or walk 126 hours.
If you want to lose weight permanently after 40, be aware of the smaller meals and snacks. These count too.
